The Patchwork Bike

by Maxine Beneba Clarke

Easy CLARKE

When you live in a village at the edge of the no-go desert, you need to make your own fun. That's when you and your brothers get inventive and build a bike from scratch, using everyday items like an old milk pot (maybe Mum is still using it, maybe not) and a used flour sack. You can even make a license plate from bark if you want. The end result is a spectacular bike, perfect for whooping and laughing as you bumpetty bump over sand hills, past your fed-up mum and right through your mud-for-walls home.

Duck on a Bike

by David Shannon

Easy SHANNON

One day down on the farm, Duck got a wild idea. "I bet I could ride a bike," he thought. He waddled over to where the boy parked his bike, climbed on, and began to ride. At first he rode slowly and he wobbled a lot, but it was fun! Duck rode past Cow and waved to her. "Hello, Cow!" said Duck. "Moo," said Cow. But what she thought was, "A duck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!" And so Duck rides past Sheep, Horse, and all the other barnyard animals. Suddenly, a group of kids ride by on their bikes and run into the farmhouse, leaving the bikes outside. Now ALL the animals can ride bikes, just like Duck!

Curious George Rides a Bike

by H.A. Rey

Easy REY

George can do all kinds of tricks on his new bicycle--even popping a wheelie! When the Man with the Yellow Hat tells him not to go too far, George gets curious and sets off on a journey through his neighborhood. From helping the paperboy with his route to offering a bugle to an ostrich to helping a bear down from a tree.

by Kellie DuBay Gillis

Easy GILLIS
